Hiking Trails for Every Type of Traveller

There are many great walks throughout New Zealand, ranging from half day jaunts to a number of exciting multi day hikes. Taking in a range of breathtaking scenery, it’s fantastic to pull on your hiking boots and get out there.

Multi-day Hikes

For lovers of the great outdoors there is nothing better than leaving the city behind and heading out into the wilderness. Camping out in the great outdoors and enjoying the spectacular starlit nights of New Zealand is another draw.

  • The Milford track is a popular 4 day hike through the Fiordland national park. Following ancient Maori routes, visitors can enjoy forests, mountains and lakes.
  • The Kepler track is a convenient loop that takes in lakeside forests, open plains and mountain ridges. It typically takes four days to complete and starts in Fiordland national park.

Day Hikes

For something a little less strenuous, a good day hike is ideal. Taking in varied scenery, but back to civilization in time for dinner you can’t lose!

  • The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 12 mile trek that takes you through the Tongariro national park. Up and over the barren, volcanic landscape, taking in the thermal waters of the emerald lakes and the red crater, it’s an epic journey. The area was used in Lord of the Rings as Mordor and Mount Doom is ever present.
  • Trekking from Medlands beach to Abel Tasman National park will take you on a coastal walk taking in spectacular views over the sea. You’ll pass by lush forest, golden sands and granite cliffs on this four to five hour hike.

For an overnight adventure to take in a spectacular sunrise, head for the Mount Cook National park and head for the Mueller Hut Route. It’s a steep three mile trek up, but the views are worth it. Blue glacial lakes, rivers and the surrounding mountains can all be viewed. The plateau is 6000ft high, but once you’ve crossed the fields, you’ll be rewarded with a bunk in the hut. Set your alarm early in order to enjoy a beautiful sunrise.
